1st Grade Reading and Writing

Students will be learning how to read and write through the Wilson Fundations program. Below are the units we will cover in first grade in order to prepare students for second grade. Students will receive homework each night that corresponds to what they learned in school on the same day. 
 

Unit 1 (3 weeks)

> letter formation, recognition and sounds for lower-case letters a-z

> alphabetical order

 

Unit 2 (2 weeks)

> blending and reading three-sound short vowel words (cvc)

> sentence dictation procedures: capitalization, punctuation and proofreading procedures

> story retelling in detail and sequence

Trick words: the, a, and, is, his, of


Unit 3 (2 weeks)

> digraphs - wh, ch, sh, th, ck

High Frequency words: this, that, those, them

Trick Words: as, has, to, into, we, he, she be, me


Unit 4 (3 weeks)

> bonus letter rule: ff, ll, ss, zz

> glued sound all

> narrative story form: character, setting, main events

> punctuation: exclamation point, quotation marks

Trick Words: you, your, I, they, was, one, said


Unit 5 (3 weeks)

> glued sounds: am, an

Trick Words: from, have, do, does


Unit 6 (3 weeks)

> baseword and suffix with the suffix -s

> pluralization

> narrative fiction versus informational books

Trick Words: were, are, who, what, when, where


Unit 7 (3 weeks)

> Glued sounds: ang, ing, ong, ung, ank, ink, onk unk

Trick Words: why, by, my, try, put, two, too, very, also, some, come


Unit 8 (2 weeks)

> Consonant blends and digraph blends

> Blending and reading words with up to four sounds

> R-controlled vowel sounds: ar, or, er, ir, ur

Trick Words: would, could, should, her, over, number


Unit 9 (2 weeks)

> closed syllables concept with short vowels

> closed syllable versus open syllables

> vowel team sounds for ai, ay, ee, ea, ey, oi, oy

Trick Words:  say, says, see, between, each


Unit 10  (dipthongs) (3 weeks)

> segmenting and blending up to 5 sounds

> suffix -ed, -ing added to unchanging base words with closed syllables

> vowel team sounds for oa, oe, ow, ou, oo, ue, ew, au, aw

Trick Words: any, many, how, now, down, out, about, our

 

Unit 11  (vowel consonant e) (3 weeks)

> vowel consonant-e syllable in one-syllable words

> long vowel sounds

Trick Words: friend, other, another, none, nothing


Wilson's: Unit 12  (multisyllabic words) (3 weeks)

> concept of a syllable in multisyllabic words

> compound words

> syllable division rules

> paragraph structure

Trick Words: people, month, little, been, own, want, Mr. Mrs.


Unit 13  (suffix -s -es) (3 weeks)

> suffix -s, -ing, -ed added to multisyllabic words

> suffix -es added to basewords with closed syllables

Unit 14  (2 weeks)

> review of word structure and concepts

> review sentence construction and proofreading
