My name is Melissa Percontino, and I am an 8th grade English Language Arts Teacher at Robert Fulton School. Although it is only my second year as a Wildcat, I am starting my fourteenth year in the North Bergen School District. I love what I do and am looking forward to sharing my passion with my new students in a totally new way this year: virtually. I know it seems daunting, but I am confident we will all grow and learn if we work together.
In my free time, you can find me spending time with my family, listening to music and singing along loudly, chauffeuring kids, giving exceptional advice, reading, doodling, scrap-booking, trying new recipes, biking, swimming, exercising, or going to the beach.
My husband and three children ages 10, 6, and soon to be 5 mean the world to me. My husband Joe and my children Joey, Jake, and Elaina are what makes me tick. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my faithful and adorable pets. My English bulldog Benny and Frenchie Lucy are as loving as loyal as they come. I attribute my successes and vivaciousness to my wonderful and comedic parents who support and inspire me and can always make me laugh. I have one older sister who is like a second mom to me, amazing in laws, and a wonderful group of brother and sister in laws, nieces and nephews (both children and dogs) who complete my immediate family circle. I look forward to getting to know you and yours as we adventure though life and this course together.
Since we will be starting out the year a completely new and fresh way, I'd like to give you a brief overview of what's to come in the next few weeks to help with the transition and ease your fears of this somewhat uncharted territory.
A Look Ahead into the Curriculum:
We have yet to meet in person, and I'd like to get properly acquainted, so during the first week starting Tuesday, September 8th, we will be getting to know one another and also laying down the foundation of expectations, routines, and procedures for virtual learning. We will go over the daily/weekly schedule and best means to contact me throughout the day. I will help you navigate through my web page, google classroom, Remind, and the Pearson's myPerspectives website. I will also be reviewing our district's virtual learning plan and new participation grading rubric. 😊
On Monday, September 14th, I will delve deeper into the ins and outs of the myPerspectives/SAVAAS website and students will have 40 minutes to begin The Beginning of the Year Assessment.
Tuesday the 15th will be another day to finish the Assessment during one 40 minute block and then we will discuss the role Audible and Storyworks will play in our school day. All links will be provided.
On Wednesday, September 16th Any students who receive Accommodations for support and/or additional time will have to finish and submit the Assessment.
Thursday and Friday of that week, we will be working on mini lessons regarding standards and topics we will see in the upcoming weeks such as Characterization, Conflict, Plot, and Theme as well as lay the groundwork for formatting Summaries and Short Constructed Responses.
Monday, September 21st we will be launching Unit 1 of the text which focuses on the theme: Rites of Passage and covers the essential question, "What are some milestones on the path to growing up?" Through reading multiple texts and genres, viewing multi media, learning and working with content area and academic vocabulary, writing and gathering evidence, and having many discussions, we will learn about ourselves and the world around us as we become proficient in our ELA standards.
I hope this overview gives you some reassurance that our time together will be both rewarding and enjoyable. Things are subject to change as we work through virtual learning, but I will be here every step of the way.
